Erdington Oaks Play Area, Birmingham

Birmingham City Council

Jack Moody Group

Project details:
Edrington Oaks is a new play area, central to a major housing development in the Short Heath neighbourhood of north Birmingham. The area has been re-masterplanned, with a completely new road layout and around 100 new-build residential properties, adjacent to two refurbished 8-storey blocks. Mature trees have been retained in the undulating landform, offering the landscape architects the opportunity to integrate natural features amongst the new playground equipment. The scale of the play area and large local catchment of young families means the playground is expected to be a very well-used facility and has been well built to last, with new surfaces including a paved central area, macadam main pathways, resin bound trails and artificial grass beneath the play equipment. Similarly, the furniture also needed to be robust and the bespoke all-stainless steel Zenith® curved bench was specifically designed for the scheme. Three individual benches have been used around the circular central area to the playground, designed mainly for use by parents as a social meeting point while their children enjoy the many new facilities that the site has to offer.
