Barbican, City of London

Client:
City of London

Project details:
The Barbican in the City of London is a residential estate built during the 1960s and the 1970s - a significant example of British brutalist architecture of the era that is now largely Grade II listed. Furnitubes was commissioned to replicate the original exterior seating provision that had become worn and damaged over the years. In all, 17 seats assemblies – including single and double-sided versions of up to 3m length - were supplied and installed by Furnitubes, mostly on high level pedestrian walkways. The seats comprised galvanized and powder coated steel supports fitted with modified softwood slats, chosen over tropical hardwood because of the closer colour match and superior environmental credentials than could be offered by tropical hardwoods.
