Frideswide Square, Oxford
Client:
Oxfordshire County Council
Project details:
Frideswide Square is a major traffic hub located in Oxford, which previously consisted of several traffic light systems and an unwelcoming road junction. In 2015 the area underwent a £5.8m revamp, with plans to transform the square from a heavily congested area to a more attractive free flowing shared space, in which pedestrians and vehicles are not segregated. The new design encourages traffic to flow more freely, thereby reducing journey times, and the area is now also considerably more pedestrian and cycle friendly.
In addition to the road layout, the scheme included new paving and street furniture, designed around the concept of giving visitors to the square a better opportunity to sit down and enjoy the area, instead of simply passing straight through. Furnitubes’ Zenith post-mounted litter bins were selected for the scheme, in stainless steel with a satin polish finish. The style and durability of the litter bins complements the new look and feel of the square perfectly.
Also supplied to the area were a number of Epping square timber bollards, which were installed around the perimeter of Oxford bus station for the purpose of deterring buses from mounting the pavement. The redevelopment has been an overall success with the square now being referred to as a ‘gateway to the city’.
