Little-seen, but fundamental to company operations, our final assembly production team takes the products we design from ideas to reality with a handful of bolts, a little bit of elbow grease, and a lot of forethought and planning. Here’s Bob and Dave, a dynamic pair behind final assembly operations, two industry veterans with a lot of experience underneath their belts.
1. How did you get started with Furnitubes?
Bob: I joined three years ago this October! I worked for Contracts Engineering for fourteen years, as foreman, and then I was asked to go to Furnitubes and run final assembly and the warehouse for them – I’ve been here ever since!
Dave: I started in 1982. I walked in looking for a job, and the manager said, ‘you want a job? And that’s it, really. I worked in Southeast London at the time, and then moved with Furnitubes’ operations.
2. What’s your favourite part of the job?
Bob: I’m more on the organisation side of things, so it would be sorting the paperwork out, making sure all the pallets are ready – making sure it all fits together so we can send our products out on time. We work well together because of it!
Dave: I like to assemble things, myself. I get the stuff off Bob, and just work through my list. It’s great. It’s always something new, and you’re constantly learning; it’s something different every day.

3. Talk us through a day to day in the warehouse – how do you tend to get started?
Bob and Dave unanimously agree that the best way to start the day is with a cup of coffee.
Bob: And then we just continue where we left off the day before. Look at whatever’s next in line to be assembled or stained – we do have job packs, which we have to work through, so it keeps us on track with what we have to do each day.
4. Do you ever run into Furnitubes products in the wild?
Bob: All the time.
Dave: We run into Railroad a lot – it’s part of our job to change the wood over, or fix it if it gets damaged, so that tends to be what we see.

Bob, a green-thumbed gardener, takes a moment here to tell us a little more about himself.
5. How long have you had your allotment?
Bob: Oh, only a few months – my daughter and I are still fixing it up, so we haven’t sown anything in it yet. We’re just gradually sorting it out, and picking out planters.
6. If you had to put a Furnitubes product in your allotment, which one would you pick?
Bob: Railroad, easily. It looks nice. Easy to assemble. I like it a lot.

Dave, agreeing with the sentiment about Railroad, has a few more things to add. He’s been at Furnitubes for thirty years: surely the company must have changed a lot since the start?
Dave: Honestly, it’s always been good. It’s always been a good place to work, nice to work with everybody, it’s just always worked well. I enjoy what I do. It’s different every day, and there’s always new challenges to meet.
Bob: You don’t leave somewhere if you like it!
For thirty years of loyalty, Dave was gifted a Ribbon seat, one of his favourite products. Where does it live now?
Dave: In the garden. Looks really lovely there.
