Seven pre-set Hive layouts provide a simple starting point for creating flexible, future-proof outdoor spaces that can evolve as projects grow.
For landscape architects, contractors, and local authorities, that flexibility is incredibly powerful. But at the early stages of a project, staring at a blank canvas can also feel overwhelming.
To help specifiers navigate the system’s versatility, we’ve developed seven carefully considered preset layouts. Each has been designed to demonstrate a distinct spatial experience: from intimate, enclosed seating areas to dispersed social hubs and large-scale public realm interventions. They provide a practical starting point for design teams while showcasing the breadth of what Hive can achieve.
A hospital courtyard may require quiet spaces for reflection. A school campus might need informal social hubs. A rooftop terrace could prioritise planting and biodiversity, while a town centre scheme may focus on creating places for people to pause and gather.
Hive’s modular nature means it can respond to all of these requirements. The preset layouts simply provide a practical starting framework, helping designers move from concept to specification faster.
Rather than designing from scratch, teams can begin with a layout that aligns with their project’s objectives and then adapt it as required.
Full and half modules can be configured as seating, planting, or a combination of both. Different planter heights allow everything from low-level greenery to shrubs and small trees, while timber-topped seating creates comfortable places to rest, work, meet, or socialise.
Because every element shares the same design language, layouts remain visually coherent regardless of scale or complexity.
A series of standalone islands arranged throughout a space, creating multiple destinations rather than a single focal point.
The Island layout works particularly well where designers want to encourage movement and exploration across a site. Rather than concentrating activity in one location, individual Hive installations can be repeated throughout a space, creating an “archipelago” of seating and planting destinations. This approach helps break down large areas into more human-scale environments while maintaining a cohesive design language across the scheme.
A compact, intimate arrangement designed to create a sense of enclosure and retreat.
Created in homage to Hive’s debut at the 2026 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the Chelsea layout recreates the configuration featured within the BALI Garden – The Hive. Combining seating and planting in a close-knit arrangement, it demonstrates how even a modest footprint can deliver meaningful opportunities for relaxation, conversation and connection with nature.
Modules grouped around a central planting core create an enclosed, sociable arrangement.
The Cluster layout encourages face-to-face interaction while surrounding users with planting, helping create a more comfortable and welcoming environment.
A tessellated arrangement that spreads activity across a wider footprint.
Honeycomb demonstrates how Hive can create larger interventions while maintaining a consistent design language and rhythm throughout the landscape.
Alternating seating and planting arranged in a continuous run.
Linear layouts are particularly effective where space is constrained or where designers want to introduce greenery alongside circulation routes.
A circular arrangement centred around a focal planting area.
Orbit naturally encourages conversation and interaction while creating a strong visual destination within the landscape.
An outward-reaching configuration that extends into surrounding space.
Peninsula layouts help break up large paved areas and can guide movement through a site while maintaining opportunities for rest and planting.
A local authority may begin with a modest installation and expand it as future funding becomes available. A commercial development can introduce additional seating and planting as occupancy grows. Educational and healthcare campuses can adapt layouts as their needs change over time.
Because every module is part of the same system, new elements integrate seamlessly with existing installations. The original investment continues to deliver value while allowing spaces to adapt and evolve.
The preset layouts have been developed with a broad range of applications in mind:

The seven preset layouts are intended to demonstrate the potential of Hive. Each configuration can be adapted, expanded or combined with others to create something unique to a project. Whether creating a parklet, a rooftop retreat, a healthcare garden, a university social space or a network of gathering points across a town centre, Hive provides a flexible foundation that can evolve alongside the places it helps create.
