The Project

Once unloved and empty, Russell Gardens has undergone significant landscape updates to transform outdoor playgrounds in the local area. We were approached by Landscape Contractors, Ground Control to offer our design expertise in seating, planters and modularity. Working alongside Beckett Architecture, we created a mixed seating and planter layout for the new development.

Beckett Architecture’s concept designs included an existing large oak tree with substantially large return; we considered this in our design for the raised planter beds as we wanted to ensure the protection of the tree root would not be compromised.

Project Solution

We designed and manufactured bespoke AKRI raised planter beds and integrated seating, framed in corten steel – which we chose for its long term durability in outdoor environments. It’s also a great choice where damage to the steelwork might occur. Planter units were sealed using a protective sealant in order to avoid staining on users’ clothing and the surrounding paving and surfaces.

Picnic table units were incorporated to provide adequate resting space for public use. Providing a whole range of new playing experiences, Russell Gardens has been transformed for the betterment and wellness of the local community.

Russell Road Playspace was our first project with Furnitubes and we were really impressed with their approach, demonstrating a keen understanding of the client’s requirements in developing the brief and designs with the project team to create a bespoke seating and boundary feature. The Furnitubes installation enriches the space and elevates it above being simply for play, attracting the whole community to use and enjoy the seating and picnic area. Since completion we have received many compliments about the space and how its now a highly valued space in the local community.
