Although this oxidation process is a form of corrosion, the resultant oxide film is less reactive than bronze and forms a stable, protective barrier. It is therefore very common to let the bronze age, letting it ‘weather’ naturally to give the bronze an authentic old look. However, areas with high levels of sulphur or chlorine should be avoided, since they will accelerate corrosion.
The maintenance of bronze should consist of cleaning and re-waxing. Outdoor bronze should be maintained 2 to 4 times a year, depending on climate conditions.
